Nine and a half weeks earlier

“THAT smells amazing,” Adam said as he entered the kitchen. “Are you making Spezzatino di manzo?”

“Good guess,” I replied, a little thrown by the hand he placed at the small of my back when he leaned over my shoulder to check out the pot of beef stew bubbling on the stove.

“Are you kidding? That’s one of my faves. I’d know that smell anywhere.”

Adam stood a little too close for my comfort, so I stepped away to grab him a wine glass from the cupboard. “How was your meeting?”

“Oh, you know, the usual.” Adam rolled his eyes. “Project’s over budget and behind schedule. But, I am finally free for the holidays.” He poured himself a glass of the Shiraz I was using for the stew. “And just in time too—it’s really icing up out there. Traffic was terrible.”

“Here, tell me if it’s too much rosemary.” I held out the spoon for Adam to taste the thick broth.

He leaned in close and slurped it back, moaning slightly in appreciation. He gave me a lingering, slightly playful look and licked his lips. “Almost as good as your mom’s.”

I stood there, frozen, with my hand still raised in the air holding the empty spoon. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he was trying to flirt. With me.

Adam cleared his throat. Was it my imagination, or did his fair skin seem a little rosier than it had moments before? “So have you thought any more about what you want to do for your birthday?”

“Can we get through Christmas first before we start planning my birthday party? You have done your shopping right?”

“Shopping? Were you expecting a gift this year, Joe?” he teased.

“Which means ‘no’.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.” Adam squeezed my shoulder. That made two touches in less than five minutes. Weird. “Now, back to your birthday. It’s the big three-O, after all.”

“Don’t remind me. Do you know, by the time he was my age, my dad already had three kids and another one on the way.”

“He also had high blood pressure and a bad back—do you want those too?”

Just once I wished Adam would be serious. As long as I could remember, I had wanted a family of my own. I wanted to love someone who could love me back. I wanted to raise a child and not be one of those parents who were too old or too tired to play with their kid. And, I had finally accepted that as long as I spent all my time with Adam, I wasn’t likely to meet anyone. Or let myself meet anyone. My only viable option seemed to be moving out, but even the thought of it made me feel sick.

“Come on, it’s your thirtieth,” Adam was saying. “We have to do something exciting. What about Vegas?”

“Vegas in January? I was thinking along the lines of sand and tropical drinks.”

“Okay, beach it is. I’ll stock up on sunscreen.” Adam wandered into the living room and then back again, restless.
